In my quest for the perfect GPS mount, I’ve tried the vent clip, the beanbag mount, the gooseneck suction mount, and out of desperation, started thinking about making my own cupholder mount.
The Handstands Sticky Pad GPS mount is the perfect solution. It’s small, flat, lightweight, portable, and not an eyesore. The top has a patterned surface and reminds me of a silicone potholder. There’s a smooth plastic disk on which you attach the GPS’ suction cup. The underside is sticky silicone that adheres to the dash. It leaves no residue when removed.
Handstands recommends use on vinyl dashboards only. If the pad loses stickiness, a soap and water rinse will restore it. To prevent dust from sticking to it during storage, I leave it on the plastic liner it was packaged with.
I use it with my 3.5″ nuvi 255, and it performs well, with zero tipping, tilting or movement, of the pad or the GPS.
There may be some conditions under which it might not do as well. Because the friction comes solely from the silicone underside, I could see it possibly losing grip under the following conditions: dirty pad, heavy or large GPS unit with mount, a highly sloped dashboard, or frigid weather.
Measures about 7.25″W x 8″L x 1/8″H (1/4″H at the disc). 3.25″ disc diameter. Weighs only 5.5 oz. You can choose whatever color you want — so long as it’s black! I bought mine for $4.99+ shipping, elsewhere.
December 2009 update:
I successfully used this on a cold dashboard that had a layer of Armorall on it. Not even dust would stick to that. But the Sticky Mount stayed stuck in a 200 mile trip, and didn’t budge an inch. I like it!

Beware — this product does not work with hard plastic dashboards! But, you only find this out once you open the plastic packaging (thus making the product non-returnable) and find a notice INSIDE the packaging (and hidden from the outside) that the product is to be used with SOFT VINYL DASHBOARDS ONLY. Having opened the packaging (and therefore not being able to return the product, so I had nothing to lose), I thought I’d try it on my hard plastic dashboard anyway, and of course, it failed to hold.

I recently bought this pad for use in rental cars when I travel. I used it on my last trip to Florida and it worked fine. I put it on a relatively flat spot on the dash of my rental SUV and it stuck right away even though the dash had been coated with armor all. It has a solid area in the center to attach the vacuum base for the gps and once it was set up I left it on the dash for four days without any problems.

The pad holds the unit in place very well on the dash. I think it is much better than sticking the unit on the side front glass that is required by CA law now. On the center dashboard, it keeps the power cord out of the steering area.

For more than 3 years I had my Nuvi attached to the windshield. The problem was the summer heat, causing it to fall off frequently, and destroying the suction cups. So far, I have not had that problem with the pad. In addition, the pad is very stable on the dashboard.
